Sherine - My Patience is Running Outشيرين - صبري قليلSabri Aleel

Updated media and translation

ٍSherine is an Egyptian pop star. This song has appeared in Egyptian films such as "I want my rights" ('Aayz Haqqi).

Sherine Ahmed - My Patience is Running Out

No no no no no no no (la means no just remember that)

Chorus:

I am not coming to tell you come back, listen
Because my patience is running out
Everytime you just run away
Why should I try to get closer?
You're keeping me up at night
You took my soul, my years and my mind from me
And left me with an ailing heart
You are the one whose love dominates me and tortures me
And puts me through hell

Because of how much you keep me up all night
And because of how much you leave me in this hell
The cruelness of your eyes scorches me
And you leave me in the middle of the stream
My heart sings and comes to you again because it's confused
And you're never there

You know I used to be melt from your passion, from your words and from you even saying hello
O darling my years that afflicted me (with love) and don't heal me
I will not let you hurt me again
I'm sick of this torment (literally: I'm sick of saying 'ah' in pain)
I've wasted my years with you

In your abscence darling I used up all my tears
I don't know for whom you're tossing me, hurting me and leaving me
You miss me for like a second and forget me for years
We will never be together again

It's the last time I put up with your love
You forget me and deceive me
And never once darling was I hard on you
While you were cruel and wore me out
How many times did I need you and call you, only to find you unwilling to listen
Have mercy on my tears

Sherine Ahmed and Fadel Shaker - The New Yearشيرين أحمد وفضل شاكر - العام الجديدAl Am Al JadidLa Nouvelle Année

The phrase "kull 3aam wanta bi-kheir (every year and you are well)" is a common salutation on annual occassions such as Ramadan or birthdays or New Year's. There are using variations on this phrase quite a bit in the first verse, so I've translated it literally even though it does not make good sense in English just know it's referring to a common idomatic phrase in Arabic.

Happy New Year!

Sherine Ahmed and Fadel Shaker - The New Year

ُEvery year and you are my darling
Every year and you are well
Every year and you are my destiny
No matter what happens in the world

Every year and you are my life
Every year and you are my love
My feelings and my self are always with you oh my life

You are the years that I've lived in my life
And you are the years in which I've felt happiness
A day of your absence is a year to me
You are me and I am nothing without you
You are happiness

Every thing that has gone on without you and all the years were injury
And today is joy and longing
And you are my life and you are all my years
And the wishies that I've lived in my life

Let's shut off the light
Let's enter a new year
I want life to be for joy
Love is a celebration

In the name of life and true love
Be with me we'll rejoice with every new year
No matter how much it excites passion for you in my eyes
My eye cannot do without you, oh kind heart

The most beautiful nights bring us together in joy
If in the imagination I live with you for a moment love
Your love is a dream that grows and grows every year
The first passion in my life and the last

Sherine Ahmed - You Didn't Drink from Its Nileشيرين أحمد - ماشربتش من نيلهاMashrebtsh Min Nilha

Anyway, I don't actually recommend drinking out of the Nile

Sherine Ahmed - You Didn't Drink from Its Nile

Our country is safe in our hands
We hold it high as long as we live
We live in it years and years feeling secure

You did not drink from its Nile
Then you tried singing to it
You tried in pride
Don't be sad
You walk in its streets and complain to its
You did not walk in its suburbs fine
You did not grow up in it
And you don't have a picutre on the sand on its beaches

Look within yourself and you'll find it is friends and family of my country
And it would be hard to forget them
Maybe you forget because you in it and don't miss it
And you have never been away from it
But those who have tried to leave say there is nothing in the world like it

I was away longing for it
I forget the world and I come to it
And if I came it would remind me of a million memories that I carry in my heart
Our country is precious to us and will stay in our eyes as long as we love our country it will be in our hands
We are the ones who hold it high and preserve it in our hands
Most beautiful to us and our children no matter what

Sherine Ahmed - You Neverشيرين أحمد - مفيش مرةMafeesh Marra

The title literally means "The is not one instance"

Shereen Ahmed - You Never

You never come to me and reassure me
Oh you who loves me
Why do your heart oppress me?
While I love you you keep me from you
This is talk
I need you to talk to me and understand me
How can your heart obey you
You are away from me while there is passion between us

Ah my fire and my longing
I've remembered you while you forget me
My darling I suffer
And my eye has become nothing to you
You forget me and become selfish
And you're pleased with your injuries to me
You seem even better while I am nothing to you

Sherine Ahmed - Leave Me

I asked you with my tears
If there was as much sadness in your heart as in mine
You were leaving me, leaving me, leaving me
With my tears in your embrace

I tell you, I complain to you and I'll tell you what tired me
You were leaving me, ah leaving me leaving me
With words in your heart that taking me from fire to bitterness

For the desire that was melting me
Oh you who flees me, have mercy on me
Listen to me and understand me my darling
Make me comfortable with my heart and reassure me

Sherine Ahmed - No My Darlingشيرين أحمد - لا يا حبيبيLa Ya Habibi

Sherine Ahmed - No My Darling

No my darling
No my darling
No no no
It wasn't you who began the injustice
It wasn't you who destroyed the dream
What do you want me to do for you?

You were cruel to my heart and you forgot me
The world took me and threw me away
Why did I forget the delusion?

I called for you and you didn't hear
I cried for you and you never came back
After what are you coming back to me my darling?

شيرين أحمد - لا يا حبيبي

مش انتا اللي ابتديت بالظلم
مش انتا اللي هدمت الحلم

Tamer and Sherine - If You're Scaredتامر وشيرين - لو خايفةLaw Khaifa

Tamer and Sherine - If You're Scared

Tamer:
If you're scared
I hold you and you find security
If you're lost
You will find tenderness in my heart
Ah I would come to you
If you were in the farthest place
If you're scared
I hold you and you find security

Sherine:
I loved you and in your abscence my heart is with you
I loved you and it's impossible for me to forget your love

Tamer:
If you're scared I hold you and you find security
I feel as though I met you forver ago
I want to say I love you to you as well
Tell me you'll come to me and I'll light up your sky
Our story is a story written by angels

Sherine:
I am beside you and my life is in a place like no other
When I possessed you it was like I possessed the universe

Tamer:
I would come to you if you were in the farthest place
If you're scared I hold you and you find security

تامر وشيرين - لو خايفة

لو خايفه اضمك تلاقي الامان

Sherine Ahmed - I Don't Do Such Thingsشيرين أحمد - انا مش بتاعة الكلام دهAna Mosh Bataet Kalam Da

Thanks to RockStar from allthelyrics.com arabic translation forum for explaining the title.

Sherine Ahmed - I Don't Do Such Things

I don't do such things
All my life I had been firm

This time what happened to me
Why am I submitting to you?
How did you take control of me?
You made me long for you

I was alone not thinking of anyone else but me
But since today I've changed

There's something I've found in you
That I had never come across before in my life
I don't know how to describe it to you
I just feel it

Anything that would scare me
With you I feel the opposite (she feels secure)

Ah Ya Leil

"Ah ya leil leili ya leil" saying "oh my night" in different ways is just a habitual thing in arabic music, often used with the mawwal style which is basically improvisational singing. So before the song starts sometimes the singer just likes to riff on "ah ya leil" or "ya 3ayni" before beginning and it doesn't have any real meaning for the song.

Sherine Ahmed - Oh Night

So what if your passion left me
So what if it left me and won't return

What do you think the world is in your absence?
There is nothing neither before you or after you

I'm still the same
I'm still before you singing

Move away and flee you selfish person
I know you'll return again
But as long as I live I will not return to you
Even if you cried all your life ah ah

Don't you dare try to make me jealous
My heart loves at my command
And at my command it will distance from you
May you live like this alone ah

شيرين - آه يا ليل

Sherine Ahmed - Another Woundشيرين أحمد - جرح تانيGarh Tany

Sherine Ahmed - Another Wound

Another wound
And my heart just recovered from the first
I go to him again
And my heart remembers the first wound

I made the mistake once of calling something cheap costly
You hurt my heart and the wounds of hearts are costly

Since today there is no sadness, no color
Since today there is no love either
Oh God compensates for the days and nights
Since today there is no friends or loves
Since today the heart is lonely oh time
Oh God compensates for the days and nights

Oh night

You hurt my heart and the wounds of hearts are costly

Sherine Ahmed - Don't Hurt Meشيرين أحمد - ما تجرحنيشMategrahneesh

Sherine Ahmed - Don't Hurt Me

Don't hurt me more than you already have
Shame on you
Don't hurt me, enough
Shame on you

I care about you so care for me
My darling feel me
I care about you so care for me
My darling feel me

You are my first love
And if I am hurt I won't survive
I won't survive
Shame on you
For shame!

I am someone other than those who were deceived in their love before you
I am someone other than those who were hurt in their love before you
I am the one who feels for you
I can heart what your eyes say
They say give me your life
I'll live it in your hands
How can you doubt me?
And say that I lie to you?

Chorus

Sherine - I Don't Want Anyone But Youشيرين - مش عايزة غيركMish Ayza Gherak

Sherine - I Don't Want Anyone But You

I don't want anyone but you
I swear to go I love you
All the love is you
And you are everyone
These years have left my lifetime
My heart lived them with its wounds
Something was missing
And with you I've completed it

From the plethora of love
Whenever I'm with you I don't want to close my eyes
I want to stay with you
And I prefer to see you and live for you all my years
If a second passes without you I'll die
Your love is the only thing that keeps me alive

My darling, with you
The world and time are full of your love
Your hands touch me
Your eyes embrace me
You find me in another world
I don't want anyone else but you
And you're enough for me

Sherine Ahmed - Lebanon in My Heartشيرين أحمد - لبنان في القلبLubnan fil Alb

Yes, it's another tribute to Lebanon put out during the conflict with Israel last summer. Almost every major Arab artist recorded one.

Sherine Ahmed - Lebanon in My Heart

In Beirut the war is truly ruthless
And death has no echo or sound
We'll die, oh time, and Lebanon will live
This is a civilization with room for all religions
A civilization with room for all religions

If I screamed at the enemies
I will not complain and say why I'm angry
Or who is responsible or who is wrong
This world is dependent on forgetting
This world is dependent on forgetting

An eye for an eye and the one who started it is most unjust
And we have gotten to know injustice
There is no one but us protecting the countries
There is no one but us protecting the countries

Wake up oh south the sun is setting
And its rise is written on your forehead (meaning you'll have a brigther tomorrow)
Lebanon has seven colors in its heart
And its rise is written on your forehead
Lebanon has seven colors in its heart

I will sing eloquently for the martyrs and the wounded
I will not cry my people
Nor will I build a grave
Nor will I give into sadness
I will not cry my people
Nor will I build a grave
Nor will I give into sadness
This world is dependent on forgetting
This world is dependent on forgetting

Sherine Ahmed - On My Mindشيرين أحبد - على باليAla Baly

Sherine Ahmed - On My Mind

I loved him privately
I didn't say what was within me
I don't know what's happening to me when I see his eyes
I no longer knew what to say
I don't know why I hid from him
I'm very weak when I'm beside him
And I submit to him

All the love in this world is in my heart for you
You are the most precious person to me
And my soul is in you
If you are before me my eyes long for you
You're on my mind and you don't know what's happened to me
And the nights are long years to me

Oh my preoccupation with every word you say to me
If the words were indicating some affection
I would say I've loved you for so long
Everyday the desire grows on me
It appeared on my mind and you don't know what's happened to me

Sherine Ahmed - I Gotta Liveشيرين أحمد - لازم أعيشLazim Ayeesh

Sherine Ahmed - I Gotta Live

I wanna pack up my heart
Embrace myself
And go far away
I want to heal my wound
Yes, I will heal my wounds for sure

I want your love to get away from me
I want your wounds to get out of me
I want your love to get away from me
I want your wounds to get out of me

I gotta teach my heart to be tough
And it's gotta forget
And I gotta live

I was living all my years for you
I said I would live all my time with you
I was loving you a lot my darling
When you were far away I waited for you

I was feeling things I never felt before with you
You were the whole world in my eyes
I was feeling things I never felt before with you
You were the whole world in my eyes

I gotta teach my heart to be strong
And it's gotta forget
And I gotta live

Egyptian Colloquial Notes:

In the last song, "ma xalaaS ()" by Samira Said, we learned many new basics of Egyptian Arabic. So now that we know a few things about Egyptian Arabic, the different prefixes for verbs, the differences in pronunciation and some different vocabulary, let's see how easy it is to understand another song. The following song is by Sherine Ahmed, who is possibly the most prominent Egyptian female pop artist currently. This song is entitled "laazim a3iish (لازم أعيش)" which means "I gotta live." We know that in Standard Arabic to say that something is necessary we may use the phrase "من اللازم" and this is the same in principle. However, it is much simpler; to communicate the meaning of something being necessary one must just say "laazim (لازم) ..."

The first verse:

عايزة ألملم قلبي وأحضن نفسي وأمشي بعيد

Once again, we can see this song begins with the familiar word "3ayza (عايزة)," meaning to want. What does she want to do? The verb "lamlam (لملم)" means to wrap or pack. Don't worry about learning this, just know that she says "alamlam 'albi (الملم قلبي)." "'albi (قلبي)" is the familiar Standard Arabic word "qalbi (قلبي)," which means my heart, only the "qaff (ق)" is pronounced as a "hamza (ء)." So she says she wants to "pack up her heart" and what else? The verb "HaDan (حضن)" mean to embrace. Again don't worry about this for now, just see that she says "aHDan nafsi (نفسي)," which means "embrace myself" or embrace "my soul." "nafs (نفس)" has both of these connotations. Finally she says "wa amshi ba3iid (وامشي بعيد)." We know from standard Arabic that the verb "masha (مشى)" means to walk. This is true in colloquial Arabic as well, but actually it also means "to go" or "to leave." So here she is saying she wants to "go far away." All in all, she says "I wanna pack up my heart, embrace my soul, and go far away" giving us a pretty clear image of what she wants to do.

What's next?:

عايزة أطيب جرحي أيوة هطيب جرحي أكيد

"aTayyab garHi (أطيب جرحي)" means "I heal my wound," which makes sense since "Tayyib (طيب)" means "good" or "fine." Next she says "aywah (أيوه)," which in Egyptian Arabic means "yes" or "yeah," taking the place of Standard Arabic "(نعم)." "haTayyab garHi akiid (هطيب جرحي أكيد)" is the future tense of course: "I will heal my wound for sure." "akiid (أكيد)" means "for sure" or certainly and is a useful piece of vocabulary. So the whole line means, "I want to heal my wound, yes, I will heal my wound for sure."

Already it's getting easier. Here's the next line:

عايزة حبك يبعد عني عايزة جرحك يخرج مني

This line is pretty easy to understand. See if you can figure it out. Remember that the verb "ba3ad 3an (بعد عن)" means "to get far from."

Here comes the chorus:

لازم أعلم قلبي أنا يقسا ولازم ينسا ولازم أعيش

We've already established that "laazim (لازم)" means "must" or "gotta," so we know that "laazim a3allam 'albi (لازم أعلم قلبي)" means "gotta teach my heart." Here she says "teach my heart to be tough." The verb "'asa (قسى)" means "to be cruel" or "to be hard" or "to be tough." So "a3allam 'albi yi'sa (أعلم قلبي يقسى)" means "teach my heart to be tough." Next we see "laazim yansa (لازم ينسى)," meaing "it must forget," we assume referring to her heart as an extension of herself. And finally, "laazim a3iish (لازم أعيش)," "I gotta live." So the chorus is "Gotta teach my heart to be tough, and it's gotta forget, and I gotta live!"

One more verse to go:

كنت بعيشلك كل سنيني

Here we have the past progressive used again. "kunt ba3iish lak (كنت بعيش لك)," "I was living for you." "kull siniini (كل سنيني)," means "all my years." "siniin (سنين)" is the equivalent of Standard Arabic "سنوات". So the sentence means "I was living all my years for you."

Next:

قلت زماني هعيشه معاك

"'ult (قلت)" is of course the Egyptian pronunciation of "," "I said." "zamaani ha3iishuh ma3aak (زماني هعيشه معاك)" shouldn't be hard to understand, if but a little idiomatic. Sherine "topicalizes" "zamaani (زماني)," "my time," when it is actually the object of the sentence. So "zamaani ha3iishuh (زماني هعيشه)" means "my time, I will live it." Thus, the whole sentence is "I said that my time, I will live it with you."

Almost there:

كنت بحبك أوي ياحبيبي لما بتبعد بستناك

"kunt baHibbak (كنت بحبك)" of course means "I was loving you." If you haven't yet memorized "baHibb (بحب)," it is helpful to do so, because it means not just "I love" but "I'd like" as in "I'd like to have something to drink." The word "awiy (أوي)" is certainly Egyptian colloquial although it has roots in Standard Arabic. "awiy (أوي)" is the Egyptian pronunciation of Standard Arabic "qawiyy (قوي)," meaning "strong," but in colloquial it simply means "a lot" or "very," like the Standard Arabic "جداً." So she says "I loved you a lot, my darling." The second half of the sentence should still be seen as in the past because of "kunt (كنت)." She says "lama bitab3ad (لما بتبعد)" it means "when you were going far away." "lama (لما)" means when, but not as a question, and takes the place of Standard Arabic "عندما." After that she says "bastanaak (بستناك)." The verb "istana (استنى)" exists in Standard Arabic as well, meaning "to wait for," however, in Standard Arabic the verb "انتظر" and is absent in colloquial. The whole line, "when you were going away, I was waiting for you."

What else was she doing?:

كنت بحس معاك حجات تانية

The verb "Hass (حسّ)" in Egyptian Arabic means "to feel." There is no verb "شعر" like in Standard Arabic. "Haaga (حاجة)" in Egyptian Arabic does not mean "a need," but rather "a thing." The Standard Arabic word "شيء" has been replaced by "Haaga (حاجة)" completely. "Haagaat taaniyya (حاجات تانية)" then of course means "second things" or in this case "other things." So if the sentence means "I was feeling with you other things," we can say it is about equivalent to the English expression "I felt with you things I never felt before."

The last line:

كنت ف عيني كل الدنيا

Here there is a slight problem of context, but nothing that cannot be resolved. "kunt (كنت)" could mean "I was" or "you were," so we must look at the rest of the sentence to come to a conclusion. We see "fi 3ayni (في عيني)," which of course just means "in my eye" and "kull al-dunya (كل الدنيا)," which means "the whole world." The word "عالم" for "world" is not nearly as common as "dunya (دنيا)" in Egyptian Arabic. From this information, we can infer that "kunt fi 3ayni kull al-dunya (كنت في عيني كل الدنيا)" means "you were the whole world in my eyes."

Listen to the song again and read along to see how much you understand. You may be surprised at how much easier it is to understand now that you are equipped with some basic information. By now, you should be familiar with the essential pronunciation differences of Egyptian Arabic, as well as the way verbs are conjugated. Make sure to keep a list of all the important vocabulary differences. And remember:

لو عايزين يتعلموا لازم تسمعوا المسيقى كتير! هتفهموا كل حاجة في يوم اكيد! يالله تعالى لأغنية تانية

Sherine Ahmed - Get Close to Meشيرين أحمد - قرب منيArab Minni

Sherine Ahmed - Get Close to Me

Why do I miss you?
Calling to you in need of you
How can you leave my heart that lived for your love?
Take my life and my eye
Take my days and my years
But my darling let me live with you
Spare my heart your farness
How can my heart live after you?
And why would I live in the world without you?
I am conscious of it if you leave me if just for a second
You are my beloved in this world
And why would I live in the world without you?
Draw me close to you
I need you
May you be with me
Your farness, nevermind
There's no one but you
Get close, enough
You are life and this world
And my life and my years
Get close to me
Let me see paradise with my own eye
Living the most beautiful days with you
In this world besides you
I adore you with all my heart
Why would I live in the world without you?

شيرين أحمد - قرب مني

انا ليه باشتقلك

Sherine - Black Eyesشيرين - العيون السودEl Oyoon El Sood

The black eyes in the title refers to dark eyes with big pupils and irises, not people who have been punched in the face.

Sherine - Black Eyes

What have the years done to us?
Split us up? No. Changed us? No
Nor have the years melted our longing
No time or place has been able to force our love
It remains as always
And I love you I swear to go I love you
Ah as much as black eyes I love you
Ah, and you know how many and beautiful black eyes are in our country
And I love you I swear to god as much as songs of patience
And you know what we say each night has within it
And it remained for you melting in our sleepless ness my darling
I love you I swear to god I love you
I love you as much as that which has passed in our live
And as much as what is coming in my life
I love you as much as that which has passed in our live
And as much as what is coming in my life
See how much I love you!

شيرين - العيون السود

Sherine Ahmed

Sherine (Arabic: شيرين, born Sherine Abdel Wahhab; also credited as Sherine Ahmed; October 10, 1980) is an Egyptian singer and actress from Cairo. She debuted with single "Ah Ya Leil".*

Born in Cairo, Sherine is a graduate of a prominent Egyptian music academy. Upon graduating, she sought a record company to represent her and manage her musical career. She met up with Free Music Productions' owner and manager Nasr Mahrous. Mahrous signed and released a debut album with fellow singer Tamer Hosny. The album included solo singles, as well as duets. Titled Free Mix, it is one of the mixtapes Mahrous usually produces but was exclusively for these two artists. Although Sherine was a new artist with Free Music, Tamer had signed with Mahrous earlier.

The album included Sherine's debut single, "Ah Ya Leil", which garnered huge success in Egypt and throughout the Middle East. Critics and audience were impressed with Sherine's vocal abilities, but wanted her to revamp her image. The song included local musical styles from traditional Egyptian tarab voice techniques to usage of traditional Egyptian music instruments of the Shaabi genre. Hosny's single, along with the music video, were also received very well and this mixtape was considered a milestone in Free Music's short history.

In 2002, Sherine released her first album as a solo artist titled Garh Tany. The album's first single was the title track, "Garh Tany", and it was well-received. The single consisted mainly of repetition, with intensive manipulation in voice tones and pitch. This is also considered to be a traditional Egyptian voice technique. The music video was released one week earlier from the album release, and the album made huge success in the Egyptian and wider Middle Eastern music market. The album succeeded immensely, to the extent that it sold more than Amr Diab's album "Allem Albi". Sherine witnessed rapid and explosive popularity after this album, and soldified her status as one of the most successful female singers. By North American standards, the album would be the equivalent of certified platinum.

Sherine's second single from the album was "Sabri Aleel", which was an uptempo song, uses slight traditional techniques, but included Nai, Tablah, Heavy Bass and multi-layered voices of Sherine in the choruses. The music video's version of the song was different from the album's, and it was titled "Sabri Aleel - Melody Mix". The song was exclusively broadcast on Melody Hits channel.

Sherine's acting career is short, as she just starred in one comedy movie titled Medo Mashakel. The movie was the #1 movie of the season, however, Sherine as well as critics did not approve of her role or her acting skills. In the movie, Sherine sings and one of the singles sung in the movie was broadcasted on music channels. The song was titled "Balak". It portrays Sherine, as one of the movie's scenes, getting on stage in a friend's wedding and performing the song. The song didn't get as much attention, as it wasn't released on any record.

By this time, and before releasing the single "Ma Btefrahsh", it was reported in magazines and tabloid-newspapers that Sherine was having a fall-out with Nasr Mahrous, but it was not confirmed. Sherine was on a hiatus during that time, as she didn't release any singles nor albums for quite a while, and according to some sources, Sherine was mad at her producer and manager, Nasr Mahrous, for not fulfilling the terms of agreement in their contract.

In early 2005, Promotions for Sherine's new song, "Ma Btefrahsh" showed up on Melody Hits, and a week later the music video was released. The song became quite popular, and it was heavily rotated on Melody Hits. It hit #1 on many countdowns, and like most songs of Sherine, several artists expressed their love for this song, like Ragheb Alama and Nancy Ajram. The song was almost like a comeback to Sherine. It was featured in a mixtape along other singles by fellow Free Music artists, such as Bahaa Sultan, Souma and Tamer Hosny. The mixtape featured another single by Sherine, "Einak". Both songs were frequently aired on Radio channels.

In August 2005, Sherine's new single was also promoted on Melody Hits TV, and it seemed certain that this was going to be one of the album releases as she had said earlier in TV interviews. The promotion shows a camera following Sherine's bare feet walking, up to a chair where she sits, but it doesn't show her face. Another promo had a sample from her second single "Mafeesh Marra".

More than a week later, the single, titled "Lazim Aïsh" was released. It was also produced and directed by Nasr Mahrous, the song took a different form as it was a ballad. This was the title track as well. The album, Lazim Aïsh, was released and bacame the best selling album that year. The album also would be certified platinum as it made huge success. This is the era that soldified Sherine as Egypt's # 1 female singer. No Egyptian female singer witnessed the great level of success she reached. Later on, the second single music video of "Mafeesh Marra" was released, it was an uptempo, fun, hip song which the audience were delighted by its new and unique sound.

In spring 2006, Sherine was chosen to perform the songs for the movie An el-Ish' wel-Hawa. The movie's theme song, Keteer Ben'sha', became a major hit. Recently, she released "Lebnan Fel Alb (Lebanon's in the Heart)", a song dedicated to Lebanon and the victims who fell in the Israeli-Lebanese conflict.

In February 2007, she released a new duet with Hany Shaker under the title Qalbi Leek (My Heart’s Yours). However, this duet was not meant to be released because both Sherine and Hany Shaker recorded the song separately. Sherne decided not to release the song in her album, so Hany Shaker decided to take it and release it in his own album. Nevertheless the composer of the song merged both of their voices, and released the song as a duet.

In early March 2007, she confirmed that she joined a new label: Rotana. A huge, extrvagant press conference and after-party was held in her honor, and now she is recording her album, to be released Summer 2007.

Egyptian Music

Egypt is the largest Arab country, with about 80 million people living mostly along the Nile river running from Aswan near the Sudan border to Alexandria on the Mediterranean Sea. As a regional geographic, economic and population center, Egypt is center of cultural production in the Arab world, and the Egyptian dialect has become widely understood thanks to the dissemination of Egyptian films, television programs and music.

The story Egyptian music begins in the colonial era before World War II. During the 1920s and 1930s, the most prominent Egyptian composer was Mohammed Abdel Wahhab, who adapted many poems such as those of Ahmed Shawky to music and made the soundtracks to many Egyptian films.

Abdel Wahhab often wrote songs for the most prominent singer of this time period and Egyptian music history is Om Kalthoum. Known as Kawkab al-Sharq (Star of the East), she rose to prominence in the 1940s and remained the adoration of the Egyptian public every since. With the nationalist movement and the revolution of 1952, Om Kalthoum became a national symbol for Egypt and many of her songs of this period are nationalistic in nature. She died in 1975, but remains probably the most well-known Arab performer throughout the world and certainly throughout Egypt.

At the beginning of Om Kalthoum's career, there was another very popular female singer named Asmahan, who was a descendent of Druze royalty and sister of Farid al-Atrache that moved to Cairo. She produced several songs and films, but died in car crash under some dubious circumstances, and rumors abound that she may have been a Soviet spy. Because of her mysterious beauty and her premature death, Asmahan is a legend in the world of Arabic music.

Abdel Halim Hafez is another Egyptian singer who became very famous in post-independence Egypt. He is known for singing love songs of epic proportion like Om Kalthoum and a trademark smile. Like most Egyptian singers of this time, he starred in several musical films. He died fairly young, at age 48 in 1977, and thus remains a musical legend in Egypt. In 2006 a film called "Haleem" starring the late Egyptian film legend Ahmed Zaki as Abdel Halim Hafez. The Natacha Atlas album entitled "Halim" is named so in honor of Abdel Halim.

Today there are many Egyptian pop stars, none more famous and legendary than Amr Diab. He became internationally famous with the song "Nour el-Ayn" during the 1990s, and remains the king of Egyptian pop today. Amr Diab is now known for his ageless face, which appears quite young despite the fact he is approaching 50.

Mohammed Mounir is an artist from Upper Egypt born in Aswan. He is known for blending Arabic musical styles with more African styles. He has also been outspoken about issues such as religion and politics. After September 11, he sought to learn more about his religion, Islam, and has since been critical of both Muslims who do not practice responsibly and Westerners who hold outrageous misconceptions about Muslims. He has also been a long supporter of the Palestinian cause, and a peace advocate in general.

The two singers Sherine Ahmed (born Sherine Abdel Wahhab) and Tamer Hosni have become very popular in Egypt during the past few years. They rose to prominence together with a mix CD that contained both singles and duets. Now both have successful solo careers and have released many albums.

Shaaban Abdel Rahim is a well-known and controversial figure in Egyptian Shaabi pop music. He is a sort of rags to riches story in that he worked as a low-wage laundary man for years before his songs became popular. His typically no frills songs focus on catchy lyrics and expressing popular ideas, such as his 2000 songs called "I Hate Israel" and his 2003 song "Don't Hit Iraq" have made him a beloved figure, despite his lack of fashion sense. Hakim is another singer in the Shaabi genre who has sold millions of albums since the early 1990s.

The first Egyptian hip-hop group to achieve success is MTM. Their 2003 album entitled "Ummi Mesafra" (My Mom is Away) was groundbreaking in the world of Arab pop music. Although some of their singles are mostly pop much like Will Smith in the United States, some of their songs deal with social issues using humor.
